We see this in words like <strong><em>cat<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>clip<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>crib<\/em><\/strong>, and <strong><em>cup<\/em><\/strong>. G changes sounds when it is followed by specific vowels. When the letter G is directly followed by e, i, or y, it usually makes the \/j\/ sound. This is called a <strong>soft G<\/strong> sound, and we see it in words like: <strong><em>gem<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>gym<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>orange<\/em><\/strong>, and <strong><em>giraffe<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>When the letter G is directly followed by e, i, or y, it usually makes the \/j\/ sound.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>When G is followed by o,a,u, l, r it makes its regular \/g\/ sound. We call this a <strong>hard G<\/strong> sound. Words with a hard G sound include <strong><em>gum<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>bagel<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>frog<\/em><\/strong>, and <strong><em>egg<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-i-teach-sounds-of-c-and-g\">How I teach sounds of C and G<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When introducing the hard and soft sounds, teach students to look to see what letter follows the letter G or C.
