Over a three day period, students took about 10 minutes to observe the changes and record observations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You could easily do this as a lab experiment by dividing students into group and having one group be the control group. Each group could use a different color of food coloring. the control group would use no food coloring. After three days, students can compare results with other groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Celery Experiment Procedure: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 1:<\/em> <\/strong>Remind students, \u201cEach part of a plant has a function. All of the parts do a specific job, that together, help the plant grow. But how can we see the parts of a plant work?\u201d We know that plants need water to grow, but how does water get to all parts of the plant?\u201d \u201cHow do the roots and stem work together?\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 2:<\/em><\/strong> Show students the Lesson 2 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KIug9Foou3s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">The Celery Experiment video.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 3:<\/em><\/strong> Tell students, \u201cToday I\u2019m going to do a demonstration that shows how the stem moves water throughout a plant. I will give each of you a lab sheet for you to record observations and collect data. We will check on changes each day for three days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trim the bottom off of celery stalks. Place the celery in a clear jar of water. Add 20 drops of food coloring to the jar. (using the<a href=\"https:\/\/aroundthekampfire.com\/product\/plant-and-animal-needs-life-cycles-second-grade-science-unit-ngss\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> included observation journal).<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 5:<\/em><\/strong> On the third day, students use a hand lens to look at the bottom of the celery stalk and<br>answer the questions on their lab sheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>By observing the bottom of the stalk, students can see the holes by which water is absorbed up into the plant from the stem.<\/p>\n\n\n<div
