Flexible seating has taken the teaching world by storm. It’s all the rage right now and for good reason. Different research studies <\/a>state that having flexible seating options in the classroom can positively contribute to the “development of certain personal skills, such as self-reliance, self-regulation, and problem-solving”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the right choices and management systems in place, I’m a big fan of allowing students to choose where they work during certain points of the day. Below are my favorite flexible seating ideas that actually<\/em> work in elementary classrooms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Floor Cushions<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Starting off strong with these fun and colorful floor cushions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I love these because they don’t take up much storage space, students can move them anywhere, AND they are so quiet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During independent work, I will typically find my students with their favorite color seated under their desks. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

2. Floor Rockers<\/a> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Floor rockers are always a fan favorite in my classroom during read-to-self time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes referred to as scoop chairs, this flexible seating option allows for movement while not distracting the rest of the class. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before allowing your students to use them, make sure to teach them how to sit in them, or you will likely have some squished fingers. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

3. Lap Desks<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to flexible seating in the classroom, these lap desks are a must! This particular set comes with 10, so there will be enough to go around! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students can use these on the floor or on their chairs. I especially like using these for group work as they can form a circle anywhere in the class for collaborative work. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

4. Stadium Seats <\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For extra comfort in the classroom, these stadium seats are perfect! There are 5 different reclining levels, which give students extra responsibility to pick the best position for the task in front of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They fold up for easy storage and transport and can be used all over the classroom. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

5. Wobble Stools <\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Wobble stools may just be the most popular type of flexible seating that I see in elementary classrooms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are great for reducing restlessness as they allow the students to fidget while they work. Plus, they promote great posture and core strength. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These particular wobble stools are adjustable (from 12 to 18 inches) and have a non-skid base to avoid falls and extra noise. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

6. Bean Bag<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A bean bag is a great option to keep in your calm-down space.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My students also use ours during read-to-self and some independent work time, but they know if someone is in need of a break, they have to give it up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s cozy, quiet, and the perfect place to regroup. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

7. Chair Bands <\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you are a bit more traditional, but still want some opportunities for movement in the classroom, these chair bands need to be on your list! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These bands can fit any classroom chair over 10 inches and will not slide or break when used. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have some students who would always prefer to sit at their desks (vs. other options), but still love the ability to move a bit with these bands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

8. Standing Desk <\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

And last, but not least, a standing desk is a great option for a differentiated work environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I typically only have one or two each year (due to space), but they are available for students to use during whole-group or individual work time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes we all just have a few students who need to stand and listen! <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Finding the right flexible seating options for your classroom can be a challenge. You want to give your students choices and keep them comfortable, without creating too many distractions. I hope these 8 flexible seating ideas gave you practical, realistic options that you can actually <\/em>use in your classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
