Learning how to use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words can be a tricky concept for third grade students. What are Context Clues?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Context clues are clues in the text that readers can use to determine the meaning of unknown words. Often context clues can be found in the text around the unknown word. There are five types of context clues that students should look for to help them determine the meaning of a word or to better understand what they are reading.<\/p>\n\n\n

5 Types of Context Clues and Examples<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1. Definition:<\/strong> When the meaning of the unknown word is directly given in the sentence. <\/td>means, or, is, are, called<\/td>At atlas <\/em><\/strong>is a book of maps and charts. <\/td><\/tr>
2. Examples<\/strong>: When examples of the unknown word are given in the sentence or sentences around the word. <\/td>such as, for example, like<\/td>The story was full of fictional <\/em><\/strong>creatures, such as <\/em>unicorns, dragons, and mermaids. <\/td><\/tr>
3. Synonyms:<\/strong> A word that means the same thing as the unknown word is given in the sentence. <\/td>also, like, same, similar, too<\/td>Just like<\/em> her caring<\/em> sister, Allie is very compassionate. <\/em><\/strong><\/td><\/tr>
4. Antonyms: <\/strong>A word that means the opposite of the unknown word is given in the sentence. <\/td>unlike, but, however, different, in contrast<\/td>The house across the street may be valuable, but<\/em> this one is worthless. <\/em><\/strong><\/td><\/tr>
5. Inference: <\/strong>The meaning of the unknown word is not explained, so you have to look around the word for other clues and hints in the sentences. <\/td>No signal words. One of the easiest strategies to teach context clues<\/a> is to model a self-questioning approach. The strategy I have found to be most helpful for students attempting to use context clues is to teach them to ask specific questions about unfamiliar words<\/a> they encounter while reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
